“I first wanted to thank all of you for all the hard work in planning the March for Babies and then executing all the details on Walk day.  Everything as far as I heard and saw went smoothly and all walkers had a great time.  We had beautiful weather and a great group of walkers!

Our preliminary numbers are:

600 paid walkers and 400 walkers who came with the paid walkers for a total of 1,000 participants

It looks like we will hit $95,000 by the end of the year.  There are a few things yet to happen like:  Kmart (in Waupaca)  campaigns goes until end of June, Famous Footwear has a fall campaign for us and Macy’s Shop For A Cause is again going to benefit the March of Dimes.

Sticking to those goals was clearly evident in 2011 with increased membership and the launch of new programs.

“Our hands-on approach to helping these businesses succeed leads to innovation and a culture of entrepreneurship, which, in turn, leads to the creation of new wealth and more jobs,” executive director Bobbie Beckman said in an email.

About 100 businesses joined the chamber last year. Membership now hovers around 550 and includes a wide range of industries from retail to health care.

Benefits received upon joining include networking opportunities as well as complimentary advertising through email alerts and Facebook.

“Running a successful business takes more than a great idea and a solid business plan – it requires marketing strategies that will get the name out in front of the public,” Beckman said.

Publicity and networking go hand-in-hand at the chamber’s numerous seminars and meet-and-greets such as Business Over Breakfast and Business after Hours.

Last year, the chamber launched an afternoon seminar program called Lunch and Learn. Members can use their lunch break to attend presentations on current business trends such as social media use and website design. The next seminar is scheduled for March 26 at Badger Sports Park in Appleton.

“Attendees will learn leadership skills, good communication, how to get the most from your team and have a chance to try out the park’s attractions at the same time,” Beckman said.

Badger Sports Park was awarded the 2012 Small Business of the Year trophy at the Heart of the Valley Chamber of Commerce annual dinner held at the Grand Meridian. Badger Sports Park is celebrating its 19th anniversary this July.
